Government appoints new Secretary General at the Department of Foreign Affairs

The Government, at this morning's Cabinet meeting, approved the appointment of Ambassador David Cooney to be the next Secretary General of the Department of Foreign Affairs. David Cooney currently serves as Ambassador of Ireland to London and will take up his new appointment in late January 2009.

Ambassador Cooney joined the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1979. He was a part of the team which supported the Government in negotiating the Good Friday Agreement. He has served as Political Director during Ireland’s Presidency of the European Union in 2004 and as Ambassador to the United Nations in New York before taking up his post in London in 2007.
